The assistance of Robert Whitaker launching the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care this week is of great importance to the many people all over the world who have followed his research. He has worked tirelessly to bring to light the devastating effects of psychiatric drugs. The many victims around the world have at last found a saviour to give them a voice. I weep when I think of the sheer number of people who, like me, have suffered horrendous consequences for so many years from taking these drugs, and in many cases have been given them quite unnecessarily and please let us never forget all those for whom life became so unbearable that they chose to leave this world.
Mahatma Gandhi‘s quote "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win" certainly applies to Bob and the very fact that Bob has been invited to talk in Boston, Portland and Eugene in Oregon, New York, New Jersey and Arizona in the US, in Iceland, England and Ireland shows the overwhelming support he already has.
We cannot change the past but we most certainly can and must change the future for those suffering from mental illness. We desperately need to adopt a much more compassionate, holistic and spiritual approach for those in emotional distress and I believe, without a shadow of a doubt, that the new Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care will bring together people who share this view.

ReplyDeleteAnd history will soon be.
When it comes to looking back at what we now call psychiatric "treatment"... the paradigm of care that has caused such enormous injury and death...
History will get the final word.
And history will have plenty of good to say about the work of Robert Whitaker.
Thank God for his research and his courage to present the facts... the speak the truth.

When I clicked on the link for Robert Whitaker's blog on the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care, I was sent to a web page for Major League Baseball. Could you please fix that?
